Our Story

This page describes the history Biopharmaceutical Consulting (BPC); Who we are, where we've come from and what we're aiming to do.

Founded in 2001, BPC is a team of experienced, management consultants. Some of us come from a consulting background others from line management positions in the industry. We combine industry expertise with a multi-functional team approach spanning development, strategic, organisational and supply chain issues.

Our mission at BPC is to deliver high levels of performance and compliance for companies in the Bio and Pharmaceutical Industry. Our approach uses industry best practice in process development, quality control, quality assurance, regulatory compliance and organisation development.

We have global reach having worked with biopharmaceutical industry clients throughout Europe and the US. In effect, we use a multi-disciplinary, multi-skilled and multi-cultural approach.
We work closely with a number of partner organisations to provide a wide range of services to our clients.

An important early assignment was with Wyeth in Ireland, initially on the reorganisation of the Newbridge solid dose facility from a functional organisation into four focused-factories. They then asked us to support the Biopharma Campus at Grange Castle, at first on the innovative Organisational Design, and then into full-scale project management. Key elements of that assignment were the accelerated commissioning & validation programme and integrated live training prior to operational start up, both of which helped to bring forward approval of the facility. Read more on our involvement with Grange Castle.

Another long-term major client is Novartis, who we have worked with extensively in Switzerland and elsewhere. We helped them to structure their emerging biotech unit by combining assets of biotech development, biotech manufacturing & biogeneric (Sandoz) facilities. A key component of that assignment was the innovative 1000-day initiative for development of their biotech products. We are also retained on a global lean manufacturing programme across all pharma sites (Chem Ops and Secondary Ops).

Because of our relationship with Novartis, they asked us to provide support in the acquisition & integration of Chiron (2005 - 2007). This started with due diligence and led to interim management of Tech Ops during integration of the two companies. The scope included six facilities worldwide, three vaccine franchises (influenza, meningitis & paediatric/travel) and two major biotechnologies (cell culture & microbial). Work continues on a quality improvement programme across Europe, and operational excellence activities at Liverpool.

We have also undertaken various projects within J&J. These include supporting a key corporate project to globalise HR and to help transition it into a truly strategic function, following the outsourcing of back-office administrative activities.

Today, BPC has approximately fifty consultants in the network working from two offices (in the UK and Ireland).

All the consultants are highly experienced in bio & pharma and very practical in their approach. Around half are full-time and work only on BPC assignments. The rest tend to be specialised experts in their field (e.g. in validation, quality, biotech development, cell culture) who we know well and retain for specific assignments and interim management roles, as required.

We see ourselves as a valuable network in the industry, with many contacts, and a place to go to get specialised people. As for the future, we intend to stick with our chosen sector, bio & pharma, and area of focus, development & manufacturing (D&M).
